This annual commemoration was initiated by the Canadian Labour movement in 1983 and was given formal recognition by the Canadian federal government in 1992. It is now recognized by the global trade union movement and by unions in 80 countries. In 2007 there were 1,055 workplace deaths in Canada - a significant increase from the year before. There were in addition 972,407 workplace related injuries and illnesses. These statistics are staggering and utterly unacceptable, but they do not begin to tell the story of the family tragedies that stand behind the numbers. CEP across Canada will be a proud participant in the Day of Mourning 2009.Sisters and Brothers, Local 42 will also participate in the Day of mourning scheduled for April 28th, commencing at 10:30am at the monument located at Main and Bay St. We hope for as many participants to join in the commemoration ceremony. After the ceremony we will head over to the Education Centre for sandwiches, as well as an opportunity to meet other Local union members and representatives. T-Shirts and arm bands will be made available to those interested in participating, if you contact the executive Prior to Friday April 24th, 2009.
